AS Unit Two: Investigation of 3D Visual Language
Title: A public Air Piece that reflects the local community/ area
For art, we have a "brief" or "scenario." For this Unit, it is specific to the place you live in, so I will be using examples from the place that I live in. If something that is specific to place then it will be in red and something that I have not written personally will be in italics. As it states on the home page, I will not be giving you coursework to do, this will just be a guideline. I might use some other colors, but don't worry about them, they are just to brighten up the page!
Scenario: Funding has been allocated for a sculpture to be positioned within the Recreational grounds opposite the river to the new RSC development. The sculpture, based on an appropriate natural form is to reflect the natural beauty of the setting but also symbolize the creative spirit that lives on in the town.
Consideration must be given to materials, scale and site.
From a range of initial ideas one will be selected by the local council for final realization.
Stuck on Ideas?
First things first, MAKE A MIND-MAP!! I know they can sometimes be the obvious choice, and some people don't like them, but in this case they are seriously worthwhile! If you are in the area and suddenly get a "Light bulb moment", then WRITE IT DOWN. When you get home, add it to your mind- map, and a whole load of new ideas will come flooding to you! But, seriously, don't worry about getting amazing ideas at first, the A* pupil in your class might have one, but just write anything -however silly- down and it will come to you.

Here is an example mind map I made of some of the topics you could go over, note that I color- coded and made it as interesting as possible by adding pictures. If it is just black, then your mind will just think of it as "boring" and overlook it. (My spelling might not be up to scratch! Sorry!)
As you can see, i don't use anything fancy, just a normal pencil, some black pens, a rubber and some crayons
It is for outdoors, so we will need to consider the following things:
Materials, Materials, Materials! >.<
Wind (strength)
etc
Depending on the site it will need to complement the surrounding area e.g. Is there a theme with certain materials? Is it very rural? Are there any popular animals? (In Stratford there are a lot of swans etc.)
It might be a good idea to do a public survey, or even to ask your friends (who aren't doing art) about what they would like to see in your area.
Write all of this down in your sketchbook, it will all get you those oh so precious marks that you might miss out on because "the teacher didn't tell you to do it". I have made the exact same mistake, don't rely on your teachers for everything, they are expecting you to be independent and to see some of your own work in your sketchbook as well as the work they have set you.
Remember:
Research doesn't have to be boring! Make it fun for yourself, if you go out scouting for ideas, make a day of it! If you plan to write up your notes, make them pretty and fun, do a cool title and borders! I know you're sitting there thinking "this is lame" but, if you think it's going to be boring then it will be boring, so hang in there and do your best to make it interesting!
