Lexis is a smart phrase for 'words', this could be said in an exam as lexis is the linguistic term for vocabulary. When you first look at the texts in the exam the first thing you will analyse is the lexis; such as nouns, verbs, adverbs. You can also analyse Lexis in chunks or phrases this is know as lexical phrases. These are well known lexis such as; on the other hand, once upon a time...
Our English has been influenced by other cultures and Languages. However most of the commonly used lexis is from old English; these are mostly every day words such as; house, car, be ect.... We that type of English 'old English' because the language British people used to speak was only from our country, however alot of our lexis is borrowed from other countries like France and Latin. This is the reason why the English language has so many synonyms (words which have the same meaning such as; food and grub). Words which sound more formal normally come from other countries rather than Old English for example chew is from old English however masticate is from Latin.
